Hong Kong Vol. 1

By Maha Alavi

4 days in Hong Kong! A few spots we enjoyed on a quick business trip to the electric island. I would have loved to stay longer and explore more of the sights - already planning another trip later in the year. Anyway, here are some places we did visit and loved so much.

  1. STAY
We stayed at the lovely AKI Hotel in Wan Chai. Their corner Japanese room was styled beautifully with tatami mats, floor-to-ceiling windows surrounding the room, and really lovely views of both the mountains and the cityscape. A tranquil and serene stay in a sometimes hectic city. The location of the hotel is good, and the breakfast buffet was well stocked. Room service was timely and the HK style steak with black pepper sauce was perfect.

  2. EATS
For a quick HK style breakfast, I recommend My Cup of Tea. A small but lively establishment with the most delicious egg sandwiches, kaya toast, and pineapple buns - make sure to order milk tea as well to top it all off.

I love traditional Chinese desserts so much. We went to this one spot that was exceptionally yummy, Shum Shum Desserts - which is also on the Michelin Guide! I would honestly go here every night if I could. It's a bit out of the way though. And perhaps most importantly, when in Hong Kong, literally anywhere you see egg tarts, grab one! They're bound to be absolute perfection. I think I had like anywhere from 2-5 egg tarts a day while I was there. Truly unhinged but so worth it!

  3. SHOP
Hak Dei in Mong Kok is an amazing little place for all sorts of home goods. I also found the curation for clothes at Kapok really nice. If you go to the one on Sun Street, you'll also be able to swing by the Monocle Shop and my favourite Blue Bottle location (see next bullet). Co Ninety is a short walk away too, definitely worth a visit for curated ceramics and other considered items.

  4. COFFEE
Hara Kako in Sheung Wan is vibey, a nice spot to take a break from the relentless sun. The Blue Bottle in Wan Chai as well is a great spot to work at. 3-4 floors and usually pretty empty. Lots of space, great views of the surrounding greenery,  colourful buildings and hustle and bustle down below.
